There are over a billion active users of Google’s version of Android. Add AOSP and we are probably in the 1.6 to 1.7 billion range of users on Android. Both will grow — however, I believe Google’s version of Android will grow at a more rapid pace than AOSP. This is largely thanks to big and fast growing markets where smartphone penetration is still relatively low — India, Brazil, Indonesia, and other surrounding regions in Latin America and SE Asia. While AOSP works in China, most vendors I speak to plan on using Google’s services outside of China. This is what Google recognizes and why they are releasing their Android One Program.

Durchschnittlicher Umsatz pro User liegt auf Android bei einem Viertel von dem auf iOS

Google hat auf der diesjährigen I/O-Keynote erstmals harte Zahlen zu monatlichen Android-Nutzern (MAU) und Entwicklerumsätzen genannt. Es ist wenig überraschend, warum sich Google bis jetzt damit Zeit gelassen hat, denn diese Zahlen beweisen ein für alle mal, was wir auch vorher schon wussten:

Entwickler können sehr viel weniger Geld auf Android verdienen als auf iOS. Nutzer von Google Android gaben über den selben Zeitraum nur halb so viel für Apps aus als iOS-Nutzer, obwohl die Android-Nutzerschaft mehr als doppelt so groß ist.

Folglich liegt der durchschnittliche Umsatz pro User auf Android bei ungefähr einem Viertel von dem auf iOS.

Alles nicht überraschend. Aber nun dürfte auch dem letzten deutlich werden, dass die beiden Plattformen grundverschieden sind und nicht schlicht auf der Basis nackter Marktanteilszahlen verglichen werden können.… Weiterlesen

Android TV ist Googles 6.(!) Anlauf Richtung Fernseher

Das Wall Street Journal schreibt über den gestern vorgestellten Anlauf von Google Richtung TV-Geräte, welcher immerhin den insgesamten sechsten(!) Anlauf von Google diesbezüglich darstellt:

Since 2010, Google has tried easing itself into the living room with various boxes, dongles and gadgets that put its software and services on your TV. Each attempt has been a little different and usually a little better, but there has yet to be a critically acclaimed box-office hit. Perhaps the previously reported Android TV, formally introduced today at Google I/O, will be different.

SDK für Wearables: Android sichert Googles Zukunft

Googlewatchblog: Sundar Pichai kündigt Android SDK für Wearables an:

Um diesen wichtigen Markt nicht zu verpassen, wird Google in etwa 2 Wochen das Android SDK für Wearables veröffentlichen und damit für all diese Geräte eine völlig neue Grundlage zu schaffen. Weitere Details hat Google bzw. Sundar Pichai noch nicht genannt, die Geräte sollen aber problemlos untereinander Daten austauschen und miteinander arbeiten können. Aufgebaut werden soll das gesamte System in einen Oberflächen- und einen Daten-Layer.

Das ist quasi ein direkter Blick auf die strategische Bedeutung eines erfolgreichen Androids für Google. Egal was kommt, Google hat mit Android ‚leicht‘ und schnell den OS-Fuß in der Tür. Und aktuell sind sie damit die einzigen.

41 Prozent aller Android-Geräte im letzten Quartal wurden in China verkauft

Before we call off the smartphone battle and declare Google the winner (an 81.9 percent share is huge in any market), Gartner’s report does point to the key factors behind Android’s growth. China accounted for a massive 41 percent of all Android sales in the last quarter, up seven percent from a year ago, helped by sales of Coolpad and Xiaomi smartphones. Unfortunately for Google, the majority of Chinese Android devices do not utilize the Play Store and run customized builds of its open-source operating system. In October, analyst Benedict Evans suggested just 6 percent of Chinese app installs were made via Google’s app marketplace, helping add some balance to Google’s mobile dominance.

Project Ara: Motorola plant modulare Smartphones

Motorola hat ein spannendes neues Projekt vorgestellt, das modulare Smartphones erlauben soll.

Motorola has unveiled Project Ara, an open-source initiative for modular smartphones with the goal to "do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software." The company plans to create an ecosystem that can support third-party hardware development for individual phone components — in other words, you could upgrade your phone’s processor, display, and more by shopping at different vendors.

The modules "can be anything," says Motorola, giving examples ranging from a new keyboard or battery to more unusual components such as a pulse oximeter.

Globaler Tabletmarkt: iPads und Android-Tablets erledigen unterschiedliche Aufgaben

Der Analyst Benedict Evans hat den globalen Tablet-Markt seinen Berechnungen folgend aufgeschlüsselt:

Wie immer fehlen naturgemäß die Zahlen von Amazons Kindle Fire.

Aber drei Aspekte sind trotzdem interessant:

1. Der sinkende Anteil des iPads bei den Neuverkäufen.

2. Die steigenden Verkaufszahlen der ‚nicht aktivierten‘ Android-Geräte, also extrem günstige Android-Tablets, die ohne Google-Apps kommen. (Sprich: China.)

3. Die marginalen Verkaufszahlen des Nexus.

Vor allem (3) ist interessant, weil Google mit dem Nexus 7 und 10 gut verbaute Tablets zu sehr niedrigen Preisen verkauft. Im Gegensatz zu den anderen Android-Geräten bringt das Nexus auch ein reines, nicht mit Hersteller-Apps und eigenen Oberflächen verstopftes Android mit.

Aber anscheinend interessiert das die potenziellen Käufer nicht. Warum? Und, daran anschließend, warum verkaufen sich extrem billige Android-Tablets so gut?… Weiterlesen

Wie Google Android verschließt und Hersteller knebelt

Wir wissen seit mindestens 2010, dass Google bei Android mit den eigenen Apps (GMail, Maps) und dem Zugang zum eigenen Appstore die Kontrolle über Android sicherstellt. Google geht aber mittlerweile sehr viel weiter. Die Frage, die sich Google stellt, nachdem Android Marktführer bei Smartphones geworden ist, lautet: Wie kann man bei einem Open-Source-Projekt die Kontrolle (zurück) erhalten?

Die Antwort liefert dieser aufschlussreiche Artikel auf Ars Technica. Ein paar Auszüge:

1. Google macht immer mehr Teile von Android Closed Source:

Less open source code means more work for Google’s competitors. While you can’t kill an open source app, you can turn it into abandonware by moving all continuing development to a closed source model. Just about any time Google rebrands an app or releases a new piece of Android onto the Play Store, it’s a sign that the source has been closed and the AOSP version is dead.

Amazon Kindle Fire ist aktuell das populärste Android-Tablet

TechCrunch über eine Studie von der Appanalytics-Firma Localytics:

The U.S. is Amazon’s first and main market for the Kindle Fire, with Amazon only starting to roll out the tablets to other markets towards the end of 2012 (first in the UK market), around a year after launching in the U.S.
That means that some 89% of Amazon’s tablets “live in America, with most of the rest in Great Britain,” writes Localytics’ Daniel Ruby. “After those two, no other country has even one percent of worldwide Kindle Fires.”
In the rest of the world, however, the Android tablet game is Samsung’s to lose. Ruby tells me that the Korean device maker’s Galaxy line accounts for 76% of all Android tablet usage across non-U.S. markets. Nexus 7 came in second at 15%, and Kindle Fire’s global share is just 9%.
Localytics notes that if Amazon manages to work out its international distribution, then “their U.S.
