Auf den ersten Blick erscheint der Kauf des Später-Lesen-Services Pocket merkwürdig. Was will die Non-Profit-Organisation hinter dem Open-Source-Browser Firefox mit einem Später-Lesen-Dienst?

Zunächst John Voorhees auf MacStories mit den Money Quotes:

Instapaper was sold by developer Marco Arment to Betaworks in 2013 and then to Pinterest in 2016. Today, Pocket took a similar path by being acquired by Mozilla, maker of the Firefox web browser.
Pocket says that it:
will continue on as a wholly-owned, independent subsidiary of Mozilla Corporation. We’ll be staying in our office, and our name will still be on the wall. Our team isn’t changing and our existing roadmap has been reinforced and is clearer than ever. In fact, we have a few major updates up our sleeves that we are really excited to get into your hands in the coming months.

Nach und nach entstehen immer mehr Alternativen zu Synchronisationsdiensten wie dem populären Dropbox. BitTorrent Sync, das längst unverzichtbarer Teil meines Arbeitsalltags geworden ist, ist eine dezentrale Alternative.

Syncthing ist ebenfalls dezentral und zusätzlich Open Source:

Portable. Works on Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris. Run it on your desktop computers and synchronize them with your server for backup.
Simple. Syncthing doesn’t need IP addresses or advanced configuration: it just works, over LAN and over the Internet. Every machine is identified by an ID. Just give your ID to you friends, share a folder and watch: uPnP will do if you don’t want to port forward or you don’t know how.
Powerful. Synchronize as many folders as you need with different people.

Dropbox, jetzt mit 175 Millionen Nutzern, will das Dateisystem der Zukunft werden

Dropbox, das mittlerweile 175 Millionen Nutzer für sich verzeichnen kann, ist besonders auf iOS-Geräten längst zu einem wichtigen Werkzeug geworden, um Daten in Apps hinein und heraus zu bekommen.

Die Post-PC-Welt, in der immer mehr Menschen mehr als ein Gerät besitzen, kommt Dropbox natürlich sehr zu gute. Und es ergibt Sinn, dass Dropbox das eigene Angebot beständig vom simplen synchronisierten Dateiordner zur Hosting-Plattform für Daten verschiedenster Arten ausbaut, auf die Entwickler von Angeboten zurückgreifen können.

For the first five or so years of its existence, Dropbox was synonymous with its “magic folder.” Save your files in the Dropbox folder on your computer, and they “magically” reappear in your Dropbox apps on your phone and tablet and in your Dropbox account on the web.

The top readers listed in the chart happen to be more popular, followed by other feed readers sorted by alphabetical order. The readers include Feedly, Digg Reader, Newsblur, AOL Reader, BazQux, Feedbin, Feeder, FeedReader, FeedWrangler, G2Reader, InoReader, NetNewsWire, Ridly and The Older Reader. All of these are Web based RSS readers with the exception of NetNewsWire.

Der Autor setzt persönlich vorerst auf Feedly. Ich tendiere aktuell auch zu Feedly.

WordPress-Macher Automattic übernimmt iOS-App Poster & stellt sie ein

WordPress-Macher Automattic hat die Zeichen der Zeit erkannt und die iOS-App Poster übernommen. Poster ist, im Gegensatz zur fürchterlichen offiziellen WordPress-App, eine hervorragende App zum Bloggen über das iPad (gewesen), die sich auf das Wesentliche konzentriert und genau richtig ist für das Tabletumfeld. Das in der Appwelt hinterherhinkende Automattic kann also viel von dem Macher lernen. Das ist gut.

Was aber besonders schmerzt ist, dass Poster eingestellt wird:

So what’s changing? Poster will no longer be available for purchase, but if you’ve already bought the app you’ll always be able to re-download it. I’m continuing to support it, and I’m always just an email away if you’ve got any questions.
As for me, I get to keep doing what I love: creating apps and experiences that enable and delight. The only difference is that I get new opportunities to continue to learn and develop personally and now get to work with some amazing people.

Flipboard 2.0 führt Follower-Prinzip für nutzerkuratierte iPad-Magazine ein

Die populäre Magazin-App Flipboard hat in der neuen Version 2.0 eine faszinierende neue Funktion eingeführt. Nutzer der App können nun eigene Magazine, also Artikelsammlungen, erstellen und diese anderen Nutzern zum Abonnement in Flipboard anbieten.

Richard Gutjahr hat s ich Flipboard 2.0 angeschaut :

Mit nur zwei Berührungen kann ich den Artikel nun zu einem bereits bestehenden Magazin hinzufügen – oder aber ein neues Heft erstellen. Ich kann entscheiden, ob ich die Sammlung nur für mich mache, oder aber mit der Welt (Flipboard, Facebook & Co) teilen möchte.

Mit der Funktion “Lesezeichen” lassen sich künftig Magazine abonnieren – egal ob von professionellen Anbietern oder von Lesern kuratiert. Praktisch: Die Suchfunktion erleichtert das Aufspüren interessanter Angebote.

Dropbox übernimmt Mailbox

Das ging schnell: Dropbox hat die Mailapp Mailbox übernommen. Und das nur einen Monat nachdem Mailbox mit viel Furore gestartet ist.

Sehr gutes kleines Tool, das die Arbeit oder das Vergnügen am Rechner am späten Abend angenehmer macht.

Ubuntu bekommt Amazon-Ads. Erfolgversprechende Strategie? [Update]

Mobile Geeks:

Laut einem Artikel von den Ubuntu-Kennern omgubuntu.co.uk werden im kommenden Release von Ubuntu 12.10 verschiedene Startmenü-Lenses Empfehlungen und Affiliatelinks von Amazon enthalten.

Entgegen des erwartbaren Aufschreis in den üblichen Geekkreisen halte ich das für keine sonderlich problematische Entwicklung, um mit einem (Linux-)OS Geld zu verdienen. Natürlich wäre ein Verzicht auf eine Werbefinanzierung wünschenswerter. Aber zum einen ist das Entfernen der Werbung relativ einfach und zum anderen dürfte die Integration die meisten User, die sich auch nicht an Unity stören, nicht sehr stark irritieren.

Spannend ist die langfristige Aussicht für Canonical und Ubuntu: Die in verschiedene ‚Lenses‘ unterteilte Desktopsuche auf Ubuntu könnte unter anderem irgendwann auch eine mit dem OS ausgelieferte Websuchsparte bekommen, für deren Defaulteinstellung sich Canonical ebenfalls bezahlen lassen könnte.… Weiterlesen
